One- Versus Two-Way Commitments
Previous: Implications versus Suggestions
In speaking to someone, you may promise I will do you a favor if you do
one for me. Now this promise is a one-way commitment. If the other person
does you a favor first, your promise obliges you to do the other a favor. But if
you do the other person a favor, your promise does not oblige him or her to do
you a favor unless the person has made a similar promise.
When you want a two-way obligation, you have to be careful and precise with
your words and promises. In particular, you need to reach an agreement with the
other person or party in which, besides your promise to do a favor in return for
one, the other also promises you the favor you want in return.
