E.How to Study Mathematics

Area pages  represent an effort to follow and understand the objectives of the 1997-2005, the prior reform, and the text books required and used 1997-2005. In retrospect, the objectives and texts in question are too incoherent, too full of nonsense, for rational comprehension and for service as a base for the current reform.    A farce is a farce, is a farce

Mathematics 536

The course consists of the following three topics with continued emphasis on problem solving solving techniques.

  • Algebra:  Systems of Linear Inequalities (including polygon of constraint and optimal solutions), graphs of real-valued functions (absolute value, step, square root, rational, exponential, logarithmetic, and trigonometry); sum, difference, product, quotient and composition of functions; inverse functions, solving equations and transforming algebraic expressions involving absolute values, square roots, exponents, logarithms, trigonometry, and systems of linear and quadratic inequalities; equations and loci of straight lines, circles, ellipses and hyperbolas; principal elements of conic sections (centre, radius, directrix, vertices, foci, minor axes, asymptotes)
  • Geometry:  theorems of circles and right triangles; vector operations (addition, multiplication by a scaler, dot product); simple proofs involving vectors.
  • Statistics:  Measures of Dispersion (range, interquartile range, mean deviation, standard deviation, Z-Score); estimate and interpret linear regressions line and correlation coefficient

The above comes from The Lester B. Pearson School Board, Curriculum Selection Booklet, 2001-2. The latter had no part in the composition of  page contents.

Solving Linear Equations with Stick Diagrams, Logic & AlgebraFractions,  Ratios, Rates, Proportions  & Units = Euclidean Geometry, Analytic Geometry,   Number Theory.

will help students prepare for and take mathematics 436.  Some hunting for what is needed is recommended.  Student in 436 with a weak fraction sense and skills are inviting failure or substandard performance.  Curious students may see a context for slopes alone or with polynomials in the  first and second Calculus previews at this site.

The law of sines in Geometry or trigonometry is presented in secondary IV mathematics and examples in the course may involve sines of obtuse angles. Each course puts  sin(q) = sin(180o - q) for obtuse angles q, that is when 180oq > 90o is an obtuse angle. Students should take the foregoing formula in mathematics 436, and wait to see the unit-circle extension of trigonometry in mathematics 536 where trig functions are defined for all angles in general.

Necessary Reminder

Students in the first year of high school may come with a weak to non-existence command of the times table (addition table too) and with a weak to non-existence fraction sense and abilities.  The most important service of first year mathematics in high school is to consolidate fraction sense and skills. That is a prerequisite to algebra, geometry, trig and calculus. High school mathematics literally becomes a waste of time if fraction sense and skills are not consolidated and maintained in all years.
