Mathematics 514

The course consists of the following four topics with continued emphasis on problem solving solving techniques.

  • Optimization:  graph theory (including directed graphs, paths and circuits), Systems of Linear Inequalities, polygon of constraint and optimal solutions,
  • Statistics: two-variable distribution table, scatter plots, estimating and interpreting linear correlation.
  • Probability: Conditional Probability, odds; mathematical expectation.
  • Geometry:  distance between points, division of a line segment, geometric probability.
The above comes from The Lester B. Pearson School Board, Curriculum Selection Booklet, 2001-2. The latter had no part in the composition of  page contents.

The Lester B. Pearson School Board, Curriculum Selection Booklet, 2001-2, describes mathematics 514 as follows.

Many parts of the www.whyslopes.com site areas

Solving Linear Equations with Stick Diagrams, Logic & AlgebraFractions,  Ratios, Rates, Proportions  & Units = Euclidean Geometry, Analytic Geometry,   Number Theory.

will help students prepare for and take mathematics 514.  Some hunting for what is needed is recommended.

A call for fractions

Student   with a weak fraction sense and skills are inviting failure or substandard performance.

  • Probability, here is an echo of secondary II mathematics. Probability uses counting principles and tree diagram to    illustrate and emphasize exact calculations with whole numbers and fractions.  Probability  demands and provides opportunities for verification and re-enforcement of fraction sense and skills should not be missed. Student   with a weak fraction sense and skills are inviting failure or substandard comprehension.
  • Optimization in the discussion of Systems of Linear Inequalities, polygon of constraint and optimal solutions, also demands strong fraction sense and skills. Student   with a weak fraction sense and skills are inviting failure or substandard comprehension.

Area pages  represent an effort to follow and understand the objectives of the 1997-2005, the prior reform, and the text books required and used 1997-2005. In retrospect, the objectives and texts in question are too incoherent, too full of nonsense, for rational comprehension and for service as a base for the current reform.    A farce is a farce, is a farce
