E.How to Study Mathematics

Books for Children or Teens 14 and Under

The jumpmath program  says the following: One feature distinguishes our workbooks from regular math textbooks, however: in the JUMP workbooks, teachers are consistently shown how to help students who are having trouble moving forward by breaking mathematical concepts and operations into the most basic elements of understanding and perception on page 2 of the Jump Teacher Manual - Fractions, one of three plus pdf files in the Jump publication page. The quote italized here complies with inductive principles given in the foreword of site Volume 1B, Mathematics Curriculum Notes.

Parents of primary and secondary school students who should download and print the JUMP fraction unit (companion for the jump workbooks) and help their charges through them with the aid of the teacher manual. Parents who find the fraction unit effective may then then want to acquire the  Jump Learning WorkBooks for grades 3-4, grades 5-6 and/or grades 7-8.

Students who understand fractions may find Solving Linear Equations with Stick Diagrams   useful with or without the aid of a chaperone.

In mathematics, you may help your child learn by purchasing mathematics booklets or exercise sets which review or cover material from the grade 1 to 7 or 8 level in way that you should be able to understand.

The booklets mentioned below provide UK, USA and Canadian views of what should be met in these grades. Each covers about the same range of material or exercises.    Most likely you will have to read these booklets with your child and guide them through the more challenging exercises.

Patience is required. Find the lessons that are easy for your child and use them to test or improve his or her skill and knowledge gradually, without haste. Just as your brothers or sisters were faster or slower than you in grasping ideas, so will be your children. Each learns at his or her own pace.  The main role of these works, if your child goes to school, is to gently push the child to review ideas and skills, with gentle and encouraging feedback from you. Your child should learn that an error in one step, makes all the rest suspect. Your child should also learn to write mathematics properly - improper notation is a sign of confusion which you may be able to identify and ease. A stitch in time, saves nine.  Good luck.
