Counting or Tallying in Groups of Objects

Instead of counting via ones, we may group a set of elements into groups for tracking and tallying purposes. Now

5 groups + 4 groups = (5+4) groups 

or more generally

A groups + B groups = (A+B) groups

The foregoing represents an initial distributive law for counting groups (or units). 

This initial or prototype distributive law for counting groups with the aid of the following product rule implies the distributive law when the groups are equipollent (that is, each group has the same number of elements, see below.)

The Commutative Law 

  A groups + B groups =  B groups + A groups

follows from  the identity

A groups + B groups = (A+B) groups

as A+B = B +A according to a previous lesson.
